Brief Chronology of Mining Developments

1868 May - Start of mine construction
1869 - - The accounts of the Lackawanna Railroad Coal Department record $70,792 spent on construction work this year
1870 Jul 12th Start of production according to the Lackawanna Railroad's records, but an eyewitness newspaper report states that the machinery was first started on the previous Wednesday July 6th
1870 - - The masonry for the breaker was built by contractor John McAndrew and the breaker itself was built by Mr. Kingsley the Company's carpenter and his men
1870 - - The breaker was described in the Scranton Republican as follows : 'it is most massive and durable in every particular and is strengthened in every possible manner by bracing and cross-timbering'
1870 - - It had a capacity of 1000 tons a day and was judged to be for its time 'the most complete breaker in the state, having all the improvements and appliances produced by experience and invention'
1870 - - The shaft was 368 ft deep and together with the breaker was located at the western end of the property
